Sundial Park Genk
Links
The Sundial Park in Genk (Belgium) has been constructed under the auspices of the
Flemish Sundial Society (website in Dutch)...
... and has been sponsored by the City of Genk and the European Union.
A must-see for sundial aficionados is the Sundial Village of Rupelmonde (near Antwerp), about 90 km (55 ml) west of Genk. The website is first class: explanations in Dutch, English and French. My compliments! An itinerary can be obtained from the local Tourist Office.
Patric Oyen, Board member of the Flemish Sundial Society and designer of the large shadow plane dial and of several intriguing dials in Rupelmonde, also maintains the Registry of sundials in Flanders and the Brussels area (in Dutch).
In the Municipal Museum Stellingwerff-Waerdenhof in Hasselt (15 km west of Genk) a sundial exhibition was held in the summer of 2000. Some sundials can still be seen there.
The Sundial Park project has been initiated by Johan Gijsenbergs, then manager of the Europlanetarium in Genk (website in Dutch).
For tourist information about what to do and where to stay in this region (the Belgian province of Limburg), see the websites of the City of Genk and Tourism Limburg (websites in Dutch).
The Dutch Sundial Society was also involved in the Sundial Park project.
More sundials can be found at my Sundial site.
