Spherical dials

Private garden, Groningen

Spherical dial, Groningen (August 2000) Spherical dial (close-up)

This lovely spherical dial looks exactly like the one in the gardens of Verhildersum Manor in Leens. Here too, the meridian lines cross the hour numbers. In between are short half-hour lines and little dots for the quarters. The dial is supposed to date from the 18th century.
The meridian arch presumably is younger than that. It is not a double arch, as in Leens. It still should be easy to adjust the arch so that the width of the shadow is minimal.

There ís a problem, though, as you surely noticed already. You could because the sun happened to be out here. The axis of the sphere points south-easterly, instead of north. Which proves little respect for this special monument!
