Analemmatic dials

Elementary school "De Triangel", Grijpskerk

Schoolyard, Grijpskerk (April 2001)

The flattest dial is an analemmatic dial: no protruding parts at all. And the flattest analemmatic dial is the one painted on the pavement. Also the cheapest one, especially when one considers how large an object one gets for that. Hence, an ideal object for a schoolyard, preferably as an eye-catcher for a project in which all grades pay attention to time and the solar system at their own level.

De datumlijn The dial reads civil time: Central European Time in white numerals, daylight saving time in yellow. The periods of CET and DST are indicated on the date line by the same colors. The major axis is 5.8 m (19 ft); the hour points run from 5 to 20 hr CET. Finally, the four main directions and the initials of the designer are indicated.

To my knowledge this is the nearest neighbor of our own analemmatic dial. Grijpskerk is some 20 km (12 ml) north-west of Peize.

Location: 53.3° N, 6.3° E
Design: J. Borsje
Inauguration: September 1999

Comparable dials can be found at a couple of schools in the province of Zuid-Holland. They all read CET in blue numbers and DST in red.
