Analemmatic dials

Maria Creek Island, Kingston S.E. (South Australia)

Local granite

Foeke Tjalma sent me the folder he got when he visited this dial, from which I derive the following.

The hour points consist of rough pieces of local granite. They mark civil time (Central Standard Time) from 5 to 7 (19) o'clock. The date line is replaced by an analemma, as is common practice with Sundials Australia.
A plaque provides extensive instructions for use. This object is denoted as Sundial of Human Involvement, like the others 'down under'. There is a curious disclaimer at the bottom: "People vary a lot in shape and size. Their shadows will therefore vary, and may produce slightly different time readings."

auxiliary horizontal dial In the foreground at right you may note a horizontal dial; alongside is a close-up. It reads local time. The graph for the equation of time includes the correction for longitude, which refers to the 142.5° meridian here, as CST is 9.5 hours ahead of GMT. The correction varies between -5 and +25 minutes.

The folder has the hour points placed in "a half circle" twice. Sloppy language!
