Vence (Alpes-Maritimes, France)

Free-form pole-style dial (June 1986)

Successful example of a pole-style sundial with a free-form dial face.

The scale shows standard time (hiems = Central European Time), as well as daylight saving time (aestas).

The elongated knob on the style may provide correction for the equation of time. Its width corresponds with about half an hour on the time scale, so that would fit. The shadow of the knob should hit the time scale only in winter. In October/November, when the sun is fast, one should read the time at the left side of the shadow, in January-March at the right side. An approximate but clever construction!

Inscription: "Festina lente" (make haste slowly; not a bad advice on this busy crossing).
Standard time is denoted by 'hiems' (Latin for 'winter'), DST by 'aestas' (Latin for 'summer').
