Equatorial "sundial" (July 1999) Detail of hour scale

A very nice design, with those soft and yet sturdy shapes, done in stainless steel. Unfortunately, Almelo too gets its share of vandalism ...

The diameter of the hour ring is 110 cm (43"). Five hour scales are present, for the equinoxes and summer and winter solstices. The dates are given at the left: 21 December, 21 March, etc. The upper scale is repeated at the bottom.

But what do these scales indicate? They could account for the equation of time and daylight saving time. Looking at the right-hand picture, DST might indeed be included (although it used to end a couple of days after September 21). However, comparison with the graph or table of the equation of time shows that that doesn't fit.
Moreover, the noon points are all lying in the center of the scale, as you can see below. There are even two of them on each scale, presumably accounting for the width of the pole-style.

The hour scale

In conclusion, the hour scale doesn't make much sense. This is the more striking, as it is so simply laid out in an equatorial dial. It appeared that the designer - no gnomonist, for sure - transferred the hour scale layout for an azimuthal dial directly onto an equatorial one.
